Nine out of ten ain’t bad

Yep, I said ain’t, even though I hate it when people do that, too.

My honey and I don’t agree on politics.  At all.  It has taken more patience than I come by naturally to get through this campaign season, living with two people (we have a roommate, dontevengetmestartedonhowgreatthatis) who don’t share my views.  At all.  Okay, to be perfectly clear, we do share many of the same views, but we differ in who we believe will do the better job.  Let’s just say that our outlooks are not the same.

Tonight, I hid out in my bedroom to watch the election results so that my joy or pain could be personal — not diluted by the need to defend or placate.  It sucked.

I had to remind myself that it’s okay to not agree.  It’s okay not to share joy (or pain or frustration) on a political level with my man.  It’s even okay if we fight over whether one of us is insensitive or another one of us is curt.  It’s okay that we’re not 100% perfect for each other, all the time.

We have the same goals.  We share the same ideals.  We both put family first, work hard at our relationship, find joy in making the other happy.  We have the same need for socializing, love puppies and kitties (this is important!), want the same things out of life, and are couch-potatoes who love to be at home and live casually. We don’t share political outlooks. Nine out of ten ain’t bad.

Or so I will have to remind myself every four years on this day.

I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt (and divorce papers) to prove it. Here I am again, pledging my life to my (new) love with eyes wide open (and heart racing) knowing full well how emotionally traumatic this can end… and doing it anyway.
